The Lowveld is well known for its beautiful waterfalls. There is no other place in the country where you will be able to see so many waterfalls, and most of them are a short drive from some of the best accommodation in the White River area.

Along with having plenty of waterfalls to visit, the Panorama Route that will take you to the scenic waterfalls will also lead you to some pretty amazing padstals, where you can buy a few souvenirs and stock up on some homemade jams and preserves.

When you visit either a padstal or a waterfall, you will be supporting the local economy while also getting to explore a side of the area that is not as well-known or as well visited as those more on the map destinations.

Padstal Must-Stops

  1. Joubert and Seuns

A household name in the Lowveld, Joubert and Seuns is one of first padstals you can visit on your way down to the Lowveld. The shop stocks up on all sorts fresh produce as well as locally made jams and preserves, and it also has a couple of delicious baked goods for sale. After the long drive down from the city, a stop here is a great place to stretch your legs.

  1. Orchid Farm Stall

This picturesque little stop is only 18 km away from Nelspruit and it doubles as a coffee shop and a place to buy an orchid or two. Everything about this pad stall is absolutely beautiful and will easily enchant you.

  1. Pure Plaas Padstal and Aloe Nursery

From White River to Pilgrims, and then on through the mountain roads, you will find the hidden gem that is the Pure Plaas Padstal. Along with having a wide array of interesting buys, the shop also has an aloe nursery where you can pick up a few additions for your garden.

Waterfalls

The waterfalls of the Lowveld are plentiful and when you get the opportunity to get off the road and do a little exploring, you have to bring along your camera and take in the incredible water displays.

  1. Lonecreek Falls

Just outside of Sabie, a little off the beaten track and well into the “rain forest” is the most beautiful (and very high) waterfall. The walk to the falls is a fun part of the adventure.

  1. Bridal Veil Falls

Another waterfall outside of Sabie, on the road up to Pilgrims Rest, Bridal Veil Falls is a striking sight, one that will take your breath away. The falls have two levels, and one will require a bit of a hike if you want to get to it.

  1. Cascades Waterfall

If you are not so keen on taking a drive far out of White River to see some waterfalls, there is a stunning one in the nearest town, which is Nelspruit. Situated in the serene Lowveld Botanical Garden, the Cascades are an amazing sight all year round, but are best viewed during the summer rainy season.
