Summer is here in all her glory and now is a fantastic time of the year to travel to White River and enjoy some downtime, before the silly season arrives. The weather is warm and just lovely, and the days end with rain and often a breathtaking thunderstorm. Everything about this month is simply wonderful; everything is green and abundant, growing lush in the heat, the humidity and the rain. And along with the glow of the surrounding nature, this time of year is also pretty magnificent for those who are looking to get outdoors or even be a little bit social.

There are the usual monthly markets taking place in both White River and Nelspruit, and there is always the option of going hiking or spending a lazy day at one of the many nearby dams. And there will also be a few interesting other things that you can get up to.

This month is more or less a quieter one than usual, mostly because next month is the start of the festive season and so most events will be taking place then. That said, this is still a great month to travel to White River, because it is going to be a lot quieter than December.

Things to do this month

While this month might not be as busy as the others, if you are looking forward to a little breakaway, even if it is just a weekend trip, here’s just some of the things you can get up to.

  1. The White River Parkrun

Parkrun is back in full swing and it is a fantastic way to get the heart pumping and to just get energised. The event takes runners and walkers on a beautiful, scenic 14.6km route which is light and easy for even the most inexperienced of people. Like all of the other Parkruns in South Africa, this one is free for anyone to take part in and it takes place each Saturday at 7am at the Ingwenyama Conference and Sports Resort, just outside of the town.

  1. The Lowveld Toy Run

At the end of the month, on the 26th of November, the Lowveld bikers will be congregating for a good cause and a great party. Given that the last couple of years have been financially devastating for families around South Africa, and this year’s Toy Run is going to be especially impactful and important. The Toy Run seeks to amass toys, toiletries, clothing and all sorts of other donations, to give to those who are less fortunate. Anyone can attend, with a donation being the condition of entry, and there will be plenty to enjoy, including live music and delicious things to eat.

  1. Remembrance Sunday

The 11th of November marks the annual Armistice Day, while you might see people collecting money all over your town for military veterans and other causes, in the nearby town of Barberton, the celebration becomes a lot more formal and solemn as veterans and family gather at the Barberton Cenotaph to lay wreaths and commemorate those who gave their lives in service.
