If you are one of the lucky people headed to the Lowveld for a holiday this month, you are planning your timing just perfectly. The winter is well on its way and for a few short weeks, the weather is going to be absolutely blissful. The days are longer, the birds, frogs and crickets are singing a sweet song, and the flowers are starting to make their return. Basically this time of year is magical and it is the ideal time to head to the area for a weekend away.
At Greenway Woods, we are surrounded by beauty. Our rolling green lawns, delightful smelling blue gum trees, and the peace and quiet of the lodge grounds, all make for a relaxed haven where you can escape from it all. At this time of the year, as the cool afternoon breeze keeps the heat at bay, you will find that the Lowveld, and the outskirts in particular, are one of the best places to have a break. But while you can spend a lot of your time just relaxing, if you want to stretch your legs and get out and about, here’s how you can keep busy.
- Head over to Casterbridge
White River in general has become a very upmarket place to visit and if you are staying at Greenway Woods, Casterbridge is quite literally just a short drive away. On a whole Casterbridge has a lot to see and explore, but one place you should have on your list is the Waffle house. At Waffle and Co in Casterbridge, you can treat your inner child to some of the best sweet treats, milkshakes and coffees. And if you are not in the mood for something sweet, you can try out something from the savoury menu.
Casterbridge is also home to a local Farmer’s Market that happens once a month, on the first Sunday of the month, and you can browse through all of the locally owned shops.
- Kruger is Calling
The Kruger National Park in the height of summer is not for the weak. And no one would blame you if you were to give the park a skip once the summer arrives. But if you are staying at Greenway Woods this spring, the Kruger is a great place to visit. The heat is not too crazy, the new blooms and young wildlife have arrived and because the rains have not yet come, nothing is overgrown.
- Explore the Town
White River is a town on the move and it is home to some real cultural experiences, including antique and second hand shops, art, and old bookshops. If you drive into town and park somewhere central, you can explore a lot of the town on foot and hit all of the interesting locally owned shops that make White River the special place that it is. And once you are done, you can grab a bite to eat at one of the local cafes before heading back to the lodge for an afternoon dip in the pool and a well-deserved nap.
